Miles August 2006, 48 pages Workforce development organizations are more and more focused on achieving and documenting performance outcomes; yet managers frequently face a challenge getting buy-in from frontline staff about collecting and using data-not only to satisfy funders' needs but to improve services. Good Stories Aren't Enough looks at the experience and learnings of six organizations as they focused on becoming more outcomes-driven. It identifies practical, hands-on strategies to increase staff involvement and communication around data, so that what at first seems like "impersonal" information becomes a useful tool to better meet job seekers' and employers' needs. http://www.ppv.org/ppv/publications/assets/203_publication.pdf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Workforce3 One is a Department of Labor site and is a collaborative effort that represents the merging of national, state, and local leadership into one system committed to embracing and installing a demand-driven culture in the publicly funded workforce system. In a time of shrinking budgets and increased economic change, the pressures on public workforce agencies and private outplacement firms are enormous, and the costs of competing against each other, rather than working in partnership, are extremely high. Hear from experts in both the public workforce system and private outplacement industry who will make the case for partnership-the rationale, the benefits, and how to overcome the inevitable challenges. This report is part of a suite of research projects entitled 'A well-skilled future: Tailoring VET to the emerging labour market' (http://www.ncver.edu.au/publications/1721.html) conducted by a consortium of researchers from the National Institute of Labour Studies and the Centre for Post-compulsory Education and Lifelong Learning. This report aims to clarify the term 'skill shortage' and to explain how skill shortages can be resolved naturally by market forces. It also provides some guidance on determining when a skill shortage requires public-policy intervention. http://www.ncver.edu.au/publications/1732.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From New Zealand Literacy Portals http://www.nzliteracyportal.org.nz/ Strategies to engage older workers in literacy learning - 2004 (Aus) This Australian research report, from another National Innovative project, outlines the results of a pilot study on older workers. The aim of the study was to elicit from the older workers the strategies they implement to improve their learning and to then design and evaluate a model for delivery with older workers/learners. <http://www.nzliteracyportal.org.nz/imsdirector.php?resid=2901&ruid=2182 > Taking the lead: A national WELL strategy for the services industries - 2006 (Aus) Taking the Lead is a strategic project funded through the WELL Programme in Australia. This is the first nationally representative study of learners and programs using comparable measures to assess participants' literacy and numeracy skills. The survey is the first allowing researchers to compare adult education students' skills to those of the general adult population. The study also marks the first time a large-scale measure of literacy skills was conducted in both Spanish and English. An interactive data tool also is available.
