Hi, Barbara and others LaGuardia Community College in New York City has developed a modern hospitality curriculum with funds from the Department of Labor for a national demonstration project. It includes listening activities that students can download on MPE players and other very cool stuff. While they do not have a separate glossary that highlights essential words (may-be they do and I just don't remember seeing it), many of the common phrases and expressions appear in their curriculum. I'm posting the link to the site for the national conference on VESL and workplace ESL that LaGuardia hosted last November where a number of folks talk about what counts in linking ESOL and workforce skills. This would be a massive undertaking, as whatever programs are out there are not generally funded by a central funder and thus have no particular reason to report what they are doing to a central place. However, a number of states do fund workplace basic skills programs -- which might fall under the heading of "concurrent vocational and language training." Those states likely have databases of their respective programs. To find out which states do or don't keep such databases, I'd suggest contacting the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium (www.naepdc.org). In years past, reports from projects which participated in the National Workplace Literacy Program (funded by the US Dept. of Ed.) were stored at the ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult, Career, and Vocational Education at Ohio State University. There is a discussion of a concurrent program at the College of Lake County in Illinois in a report that I wrote with Forrest Chisman. It combines vocational training in a number of areas with VESL courses. The program is provided at the community college, however, not at the workplace.
