Hi everyone - I wanted to let you know about a conference the Center for an Urban Future is co-sponsoring with the Business Council of New York State, Inc. and the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy on the increasingly important connection between ESOL programs and workforce development efforts across the state. Speakers will discuss what the governor, the legislature, municipal officials and business owners across the state could do to improve and expand English-language instruction for working New Yorkers. The conference will be held in Albany, New York on Tuesday, November 27. The event is free, and please don't hesitate to pass the information along within your respective networks. A one-page flyer for the event is available on our website at http://www.nycfuture.org/images_pdfs/pdfs/NewWorkforceNov27.pdf. We will be translating the flyer into Spanish as well. The ESOL shortfall poses a serious workforce development challenge for many of New York's employers, threatens the state's economic competitiveness, and could seriously impact the economic vitality of communities from Syracuse to Long Island. This first-of-its-kind conference will bring together policymakers, business leaders, literacy advocates and adult education providers to talk about the increasingly crucial role that English language instruction plays in workforce development efforts around New York State. Speakers will discuss what the governor, the legislature, municipal officials and business owners across the state could do to improve and expand English-language instruction for working New Yorkers.
