[Workplace 1499] Re: Returns to Workplace ESOLLloyd David lloyd_david at creativeworkplacelearning.orgFri Jul 18 15:48:11 EDT 2008
Lisa, I am attaching a copy of the study I did , "Value of Workplace Education" on a English as a Working Language program in a distribution center, Imperial Distributors Inc. I wanted to show that there were changes for the business as well as improvements in test scores. I chose two measures that could be isolated and would not be affected by other things happening in the plant. Specifically we picked attendance and error rates which were data kept by the company. We looked at the data for workers in the classes and had a comparison group of workers who were not in the classes. We were able to get data before the classes began and at the time of the study. In both instances the attendance of the students in the classes improved and this errors went down as compared with the other group. One of the most significant things was the company experienced a 44% turnover rate. Among the workers in the class 9 months after the classes ended the turnover rate was 0. Lloyd Lloyd David, EdD. My colleagues and I are looking for studies or other documents that provide a case - perhaps even discuss the return on investment -- for workplace ESOL programs. We've come across one Canadian piece in this area but wondered if there might be something specific to the U.S. I'd appreciate any leads you can provide.
