[Workplace 1518] Workplace ESOL and safety trainingMary L LEWIS Mary.L.Lewis at state.or.usTue Jul 22 16:26:02 EDT 2008
This post is to share material developed by Oregon OSHA for doing safety training to Spanish speaking/English language learning workers in the workplace. All print material is developed to promote English language learning, with the English material on a facing page with the corresponding Spanish material. http://www.cbs.state.or.us/osha/educate/peso.html There are various modules on different subjects from which employers can pick and choose, depending on their industry/needs. Of particular value, I believe, is the module called "Cultures, Languages & Safety" which is directed at the employer/manager/supervisor and 'teaches' them how to effectively deliver the other modules (or any training) to Spanish speaking workers. Oregon OSHA also has an extensive bilingual Spanish-English glossary of health and safety terms and other health/safety materials at http://www.cbs.state.or.us/osha/espanol.html Oregon OSHA welcomes other states/organizations using and adapting their material. The link I'm providing will also provide contact info for Tomás Schwabe, the 'inventor' of the PESO materials. I'd welcome hearing of any webbased workplace ESOL programs or resources material, including basic literacy and computer skills training sites, where adults can 'get on the web' and learn or improve their skills. Sites or software in Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese would be particularly helpful for my state's Job and Career Centers, particularly if they are created by non-profit or government agencies (libraries, state or local government, etc.). Thanks for what anyone can provide. Mary Lewis Monitor Advocate for Farmworker Services Oregon Employment Department Mary.L.Lewis at state.or.us 503-947-1220
