Stacy, I've seen a great flow chart and some handouts from Ohio on its ABLE
transition framework. I too would like to encourage further discussion of
the stackable certificates, employer partners, etc.

Stacey,
I was interested in reading and reviewing your suggested topics for
consideration for the Pre-Conference at COABE.
Could you speak more about the stackable certificates? Perhaps someone from
Ohio (and anyone else familiar with this concept) could add to the
discussion as well.
Thank you for your feedback.

SUGGESTIONS
Donna and Colleagues:
Thanks so much for posting on the status of the pre-conference Workplace
strand and for seeking the listserv's input on possible offerings.
I would appreciate it if the pre-conference session offered any or all of
the following:
* Stackable certificates: Info on design and implementation. (Ohio
is doing fine work with this.)
* Workforce Readiness Credential: Analyze the skills in the WRC
and identifying how these skills might sequence to the next credential in a
stackable set; linking the CASAS Employability profile for targeted WRC
preparation; EFF Preparing for Work Curriculum.
* Distance Learning: What platforms are folks using to do workforce
readiness training online and is the actual workforce skills content being
done online or are states primarily using the distance piece to reinforce
the adult ed. piece. (i.e. work being done in the health services sector
(Home Health Aide, LPN, etc.) would probably be applicable to educators in
all parts of the country; demo of what the Learner Web can potentially do
as a platform for adult learners' employment goals.
* Industry Certifications: Sessions that focus on industry
certifications and workforce development more rather than work readiness.
I would love to hear what colleagues are currently doing on any of these
topics and what else you would like to see at the pre-conference.

Subject: [Workplace 1632] Workplace Pre-Conference at COABE
Workplace Literacy Discussion List members,
Plans are progressing for the Workplace/Workforce Pre-Conference at COABE
'09. As the discussion list members who have been a part of this list over
the last year will remember, there was a lot of concern about the lack of
workplace/workforce sessions at the last COABE conference, and there was
quite a bit of list discussion at that time about the desirability of having
such a conference. Several list members volunteered to work on the project
to see that such a conference would come about, and it seemed the best way
to do this was to offer a pre-conference session at COABE '09. The committee
planning this pre-conference are all discussion list members, and we have
been working through conference calls to plan the content of the
pre-conference. The Center for Literacy Studies has agreed to work with us
to sponsor this pre-conference.
Most of the people who might attend this pre-conference are probably on this
discussion list. The description we turned in to COABE of our
pre-conference session (see below in red) gives a hint what we are currently
working on, and we need to be reassured that we are including what you are
most interested in. Would you please tell us what you would like to have
included, and what your goals for the pre-conference are. What content
would make you most likely to want to attend? Please respond to this email
and post your thoughts to the list.
Workplace Education: The Workhorse of the Literacy Race (note from Donna:
the theme of COABE '09 is "Winners Circle of Learning Champions")
Sponsored by: The Center for Literacy Studies at The University of Tennessee
Join this provocative full-day session and network with leading national and
international workplace and workforce educators and employers as we
contemplate how enhancing the literacy skills of workers and potential
workers benefits both workers and employers. Leave with a better
understanding of how educators and employers can work together, how to
assess return on investment, the historical perspective, legislative update,
connecting policy to practice, best practices in the field, and the contacts
and resources you need to continue networking post-conference.
Thanks to all of you for your encouragement! COABE has responded by planning
to have a workplace strand at COABE '09, and that will work to increase our
presence there. I truly feel like this is our conference, and that you will
continue to support it with by sharing your ideas, planning to attend, and
making presentations about your work at COABE! Let us hear from you!
