[Workplace 1643] workforce vs workplace

Hello, all - I'm back from Brussels, BE and may be a bit late in responding to the discussion on terminology

I agree with Jodi and Julie that workplace literacy connotes training and education at well, the workplace

Through the years, we've heard a number of terms used

* Workforce Literacy

* Workforce education and training (to minimize the stigma attached to literacy)

Employment focused literacy

ESL (or literacy) for Special Purposes (which could be any number of things but historically has referred to English for Work or Training

In terms of a conference title, I like

"Work-based Literacy" (since it encompasses different kinds of workers as well as those training to enter the workforce)

By the way, another tricky distinction is the difference made in recent discussions between "emergent" workers (those not yet employed) and "incumbent" workers (those currently employed) since it leaves out "dislocated workers" or others who have work experience but are now looking to upgrade their skills

For what it's worth

Heide

It seems we have the discussion of work----- terminology every time we plan

an event like this. Would like to hear more folks' voices on choice of

"workplace" vs. "workforce". Barbara Tondre

I agree. Workplace connotes training that has been designed for a

particular employer/workplace, whereas Workforce refers to more general

employment-related training, including programs that do not focus on any

one workplace or even job, but also those that seek to help individuals

find and maintain jobs with family-sustaining wages.
