On a related note, the Department of Labor's Employment & Training
Administration has posted several grant solicitations related to green
jobs training. I think some of these are still accepting applications.
See solicitation #s SGA/DFA PY 08-18, 08-19, 08-20 & 08-21 at

Subject: [Workplace 1912] New Member -Interested in Green Jobs

Hi All-

My name is Sara Jorgensen and I am an adult education program director
at The Haitian Multi-Service Center in Boston. I am joining your group
because I was on another list serve and the topic of GREEN JOBS came up.
I was encouraged to move over to this list serve because you guys might
want to talk about GREEN JOBS. This is a topic I am highly interested in
and I find students are too, especially because OBAMA is investing in
green technology and that is a big motivator for all of us.

This summer the theme of our center is Green Technology. Teachers have
put together materials and depending on the interest of teachers &
students and the levels of the classes, they are studying: energy use,
energy sources, global warming, and recycling. What helped the most in
the learning was our hands-on "Green Technology Fair." We had 4
presenters from the area who demonstrated: power from solar panels, how
to weather strip, saving energy with lightbulbs and unplugging things,
and a green roof. This is where the concepts came alive for students so
they could participate in conversations, start writing and get more
excited about our school trip to a farm with green technology buildings
and gadgets next week.

You might be wondering what this has to do with jobs? Since there isn't
much moving in the economy, we are banking on the possibility of green
jobs becoming available over the next year. We think it is a good wager
and to that end we hope to prepare our students to be able to understand
the basics of renewable energy so they can "talk the talk" and be in a
better place to get a job in that field. In addition, we are trying to
transition some students into one of three "renewable energy" courses
being taught at the local community college. We are hanging in there to
try to foster a partnership and/or a transitions program or class that
would successfully connect our students to these classes that we think
will be able to land them jobs in the green economy with an entry level
position of sealing or insulating. We are preparing, positioning and
hoping.

It would be great to hear other peoples' ideas on how to move forward in
green jobs.

Sara
