[Workplace 1930] Green Jobs

So far in this discussion we have heard from people who have located
some resources and have shared them with us, and we seem to be saying
that although there promises to be money and opportunity available
"soon" in the area of green jobs, at this point about all people on this
list have been doing is preparing their adult learners for the
possibility by helping them become familiar with the whole idea of
"going green" so that they know the concepts and can understand the
terminology and dialog. Sara Jorgensen shared with us the idea of
having a "Green Technology Fair" in which presenters demonstrated
different kinds of energy saving where "the concepts came alive for
students" and they were then able to talk knowledgeably about green
energy. Seems like a great idea!

It does seem as though this is an opportunity that we want to be ready
for. And it doesn't seem like we are doing enough to ready our adult
learners for the opportunities. When we talk about what fields or
sectors the green jobs are and will be in, we have talked about solar
energy (roof top panels, water heating), insulation, weather stripping,
etc.

We also have had talk about credentialing in these areas, and how our
learners might get the industry-recognized credentials that will open
the door for them to take advantage of the jobs that become available.
There have been several resources made available about that. (By the
way, I am trying to compile all the resources that we have had shared
into one list to put out for this week's Thursday Resources, but it is
taking me longer than I want it to to write the abstracts and put
everything in one place. It probably won't come out tomorrow, though
that is what I am aiming for.)

Here's what I would like to hear about from our Workplace discussants:

1. Are green jobs becoming available yet in your area? If so, what are
the jobs?

2. Have any of you been involved in writing grants related to green job
training? Or are any of you planning to do that?

3. Are WIBs writing for these grants in your area? I'm wondering who is
likely to be writing these grants, and how we can tie in with them to up
the chances that our learners will benefit from this stimulus money.

4. What else could we, should we, be doing about this opportunity?

Let me get back to my work on the resources now. But please let's share
our good ideas and also our doubts and frustrations. I don't know of
very many adult educators who have the time to write these grants, so
I'm thinking we need to be partnering with those who are doing the
writing in order to secure a place at the table.
