How Did We Create the Comparison Profiles?

Each of the eleven reading profiles shown on this website is distinctive. Each shows a different pattern of strengths and weaknesses on reading subskills. ABE readers were grouped according to their similar levels and patterns of performance on a battery of reading tests.

These profiles are of a group of 569 adult learners who participated in a research study called the ARCS--the Adult Reading Components Study.

Figure 1, below, illustrates the process we used to create the profiles.

Based on DAR silent reading comprehension subtest scores,
we divided the 569 participants into 4 groups.

In each of the 3 smaller groups are learners in the GE 9-12 group who show similar strengths and needs (profiles) on the components we measured

In each of the 3 smaller groups are learners in the GE 6-8 group who show similar strengths and needs (profiles) on the components we measured

In each of the 3 smaller groups are learners in the GE 3-5 group who show similar strengths and needs (profiles) on the components we measured

We divided the GE 0-2 group into 2 profiles based only on native language: NSE or NNSE.
